About the Art
I was inspired to paint these two pieces during the Great American Eclipse that happened in August of 2017.
On my way to an eclipse viewing party, I was bit on the hand by a spider. OUCH!
Later as we were witnessing celestial bodies in motion, I removed my glasses for a moment and saw a jewel net blossoming outward from the sun, similar to a spider web.
The shear power of that experience combined with the potent spider medicine in my blood moved me to weave that sense of awe into a painting.
Native Americans have traditionally regarded the spider as an allegorical symbol for the creative process. I have also adopted the spider as an animal totem of my own creativity.
How incredible a creature to create and maintain such an elaborate web for its sustenance.
